Performance Review Gone Bad

Have you ever given a team member their quarterly or yearly review only to have them be shocked by how you or your manager evaluated them?

We were recently in a new client’s office interviewing team members and one team member emotionally mentioned she felt blindsided by the “negative” performance review she had just received.

From her point of view, she was conscientious and worked very hard. She believed she was doing a great job and was one of the better team members in the practice.

The doctor had the best of intentions when he did her review, being objective, discussing her performance compared to his expectations, but unfortunately and quite commonly, the review left her feeling confused, worthless and devalued. She was considering quitting.

How can something that starts out with the best of intentions turn into such a tailspin?

Well, I would say pretty easily.

What if instead of yearly performance reviews, we shift into providing immediate and regular feedback? Feedback that not only focuses on negative but also focuses on what they are doing well to encourage more of it.

How many times have you been emotionally wrapped up in what is going wrong in your practice that you lose sight of the many things going right? This alone will destroy your culture and your team’s motivation and inspiration to meet and exceed your goals.

Remember, focus on the future and use the past as a reference. Focus on solutions instead of the problem. This reduces your team from feeling personally attacked and creates an environment of collaboration.

Be crystal clear about your expectations and goals and make sure your team members distinctly understand the “why” behind them.

Great Leaders continuously work on improving their own skills while guiding their team members toward improving theirs. Remember, it starts from the top!

If you’d like expert coaching about how to build your team, coach their performance, and build a team of leaders who make your practice as successful as it can be, we’re here to help.
