No matter where you are in your business and personal life, if you want to generate better results and experience the joy of achieving them, following these five key principles can virtually guarantee a more successful, more fulfilled, and much happier life.

1. Define the outcome you want.

Get very specific about what you want to achieve. Define in detail what you want to feel, how you want to be, and what you want to have in your life. Include emotions, sensations, and quality of relationships, as well as measurables like time, income, and profitability. Don’t make the common mistake of focusing your attention on what you don’t want. For example, if you want a cheerful, hard-working team in your practice, define what that would look and feel like, and how you would measure it — rather than saying “I don’t want to experience the kind of backbiting and turnover we’ve had for the last year.” After all, if you can’t define what you do want, how will you ever achieve it?

2. Take consistent action.

Get started. Keep moving. Do something every single day that moves you from where you are right now to where you want to be. Without consistent, daily action, your intended outcome is nothing more than wishful thinking. Action is what makes the difference between success and failure.

3. Develop your sensory acuity and awareness.

When you begin to take consistent action, your world will give you feedback — some of it subtle and some of it obvious. A key factor in being able to grow and change is how quickly you can become aware of the subtle and not-so-subtle signals the world is giving you and adapt your behavior accordingly. Tune in. Pay attention. See, hear, and feel what’s going on around you. Your senses are giving you valuable data.

4. Embrace flexibility.

If you are not getting the results you want, you must break out of your comfort zone and do things differently. After all, it’s been said that “insanity is doing the same thing over and over again while expecting a different result.” Be willing to adapt and change your behavior in response to the feedback your world is giving you. In other words, you’re either getting results or you’re not. If you’re not getting what you want, change what you’re doing.

5. Operate from a posture of excellence.

Embody the psychology and physiology of success. That means that your thoughts, words, and actions must be aligned to support your vision of success. Think, speak, and act like the success you have defined for yourself is already a reality, Speak with confidence. Walk tall. Act with certainty. If your thoughts, words, and deeds are incongruent with the reality you dream of for yourself, you’ll find it much more difficult to produce consistent, predictable results.
